If you want to discover the real France, both history and tradition, the Puy-du-Fou is a total experience with the most impressive spectacles available in a French attraction park. The Puy-du-Fou Grand Parc is open April though September, and on Friday and Saturday evenings for the famous Cinéscénie production.  Le Grand Parc is a formidable time machine, where you will pass from a Roman arena to a medieval siege on a castle. Unlike American parks, you can escape to tranquil water gardens and green forest paths in-between shows or listen to a concert of traditional music. There is so much to see and do that the best advice is to visit the Puy-du-Fou for a day and stay on a Friday or Saturday evening to benefit from the park and Cinéscénie. The park has already exceeded 10 million visitors !

The park of Puy-du-Fou is the incarnation of Vendean, people from the Vendee area where the park is located. Called “the giants” after their anti-revolution war in 1793, the vendeans tell there their own history and the history of France. It is the most fantastic French park attraction (ranked second in popularity only to Disney, Paris). It is a magnificent cultural experience and human adventure, with the dimension of these "giants of the Vendée" who built the park themselves.

One part, Le Grand Parc, is visited 7 days a week during the day (and sometimes at night). The other, Cinéscénie, is only Friday and Saturday evening. Why? Because the 3000 actors and organizers of this spectacle are all Vendean volunteers ! Cinéscénie becomes thus each weekend the largest outdoor stage in the world !

The spirit which reigns at the Puy-du-Fou is impregnated with this human passion, the Vendean are driven to teach and preserve their unique history, and that of France. If all the tourists who visit France were to only come to the Puy-du-Fou, they could surely believe that French hospitality is exemplary !

- The park is open from April to September. You can purchase both tickets for Le Grand Parc and Cinéscénie together as it is less expensive than buying two separate ones.

The Cinéscénie

Single phenomenon of its kind, it mobilizes an entire local population (3000 people including 1200 actors) in order to create a story through French history as seen through one Vendean family.  The Maupillier family from generation to generation, dramatizes the adventure of the Vendean, with the voices of Philippe Noiret, Alain Delon, Robert Hossein (french superstar actors)... More than 14,000 people can attend Cinéscénie each Friday and Saturday evening in  season. It tells initially the history of "Vendeans before the Vendée", simple peasants. The hard ground here was worked, and farmers enjoyed a simple life. The landscapes were beautifull including many windmills and even King François Ist stopped at the Puy-du-Fou to see the splendid countryside... Until one day when...

Suddenly churches were closed, priests massacred, and civil guillotinés put to their murderous use
beheading innocents. The Revolution imposed its Terror then (see note about the Wars of Vendée at the end of this page). The "simple peasants" then took their pitch-forks and their iron shovels, and went to find the aristocrats who were more hesitant, to ask them to direct the large counter-revolutionary army. An army of peasants, an army of Faith, an army of Giants. A quarter of the Vendean population was decimated at this time. But the Giants were born and their spirit lives at the Puy-du-Fou. Spectators will see the Vendean during both world wars, defending France behind Clémenceau or deLattre. The Vendean marked their history, and they revive it in an  incredible manner since in 1977. The young Philippe de Villiers (who will become minister, and is still president of the département of Vendée), had the idea to create this Cinéscénie in front of the actual ruin of the Puy-du-Fou Renaissance castle.

Le Grand Parc

(the 8 videos following are about Le Grand Parc).

Conceived from the beginning like an outline of the Cinéscénie performance, Le Grand Park quickly became a popular phenomenon, welcoming almost 1 million visitors every year. Le Grand Parc is open everyday (and sometimes at night), whereas Cinéscénie takes place only on the weekend. Every year, new infrastructures are being built. The latest is a replica of a Roman arena, the huge indoor theatre for the musketeers and the newest addition is a Roman hotel.

In the videos on this site, you will see the 5 largest shows, which are 30 to 40mn each.  The first video (above) is of the incredible Roman Arena, its race of four horse chariots, gladiators battling to the death and the lions.

The Musketeers of Richelieu show was created in 2006 in the Big Amphitheater which houses it. Cardinal de Richelieu invites you here to a representation of  The Cid when, suddenly... a succession of events lead the musketeers to come to defend the public... elaborate decorations... incredible special effects...

The Vikings is another spectacle with a lot of special effects. A peaceful Vendean village of the year 1000 is celebrating a wedding, when the terrible warriors unload everywhere with their drakkars. They quickly take advantage of the unarmed villagers. What will the peaceful villagers do to defeat the viking warriors?

A tournament of knights animates the court of the medieval castle of the Puy-du-Fou, and the court jester gets into a comic battle with the Cannonier of the palace. But the English army is announced. The real war will begin while the Lord of the Puy-du-Fou will follow Joan of Arc to battle. Viewers become engrossed in the Hundred Year War and the Battle of the Donjon !

The Ball of the Phantom Birds

You may have already attended a show of birds of prey with falcons, but there is no chance that you have seen a show like this one. With 80 births of birds per year, the Puy-du-Fou is the only center of it’s kind in Europe. There are 300 birds in Le Grand Parc, from 55 different species.  During the show the birds will perform for and interact with the crowd. You will be amazed to see and feel vultures whizzing above your heads to perch on their trainer’s arm.  Vultures of 7 feet in wing-span will soar so close to you that you can almost touch them (though it is forbidden), thrills are guaranteed. The whole spectacle is superbly staged inside the ruins of the first original castle (medieval) of the Puy-du-Fou.

But the Puy-du-Fou is not limited to these 5 shows. There are also musicians, animations of all kinds, and about a half-dozen smaller shows, some of which are for children, like a puppet stage. Two areas are based on the wars of Vendée : the Sunken Lane which immerses you in the darkness of 1793, with scenes of reenacted lives and battles. And the Grand Water Theatre, where superb animated projections are done on a curtain made up of moving water jets.

All these places for shows are in a forest and animal petting park, in which you navigate with map.

In addition there are three historical towns to visit : a medieval village, a 18th century town (video below on the left), and the village 1900 (video on right-hand side), in which you will find many craftsmen at their trades, (and selling their products).

Le Grand Park hosts 4 restaurants and many snack bars or cafes. On the whole the park’s hospitality facilities are world class.  Lastly there are audio-guides available in all languages for foreigners, ATMs and beautiful souvenir shops.

- LE MONT DES ALOUETTES (the mount of the owls)

Next to the Puy-du-Fou, towards the direction of Les Herbiers, it offers a splendid panorama and a 500 year testimony of history. Its 3 mills (there were initially 8) tell the history of the Vendean millers, but also recall that their wings were used as telegraphs by the Vendean rebels. In remembering these "giants" (catholic rebels), and at the request of the duchess of Angouleme (daughter of Louis XVI) a vault was built beside the mills.

The city of Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre architecture was influenced by the action of these congregations. Only the Eiffel Bridge built in 1879 is the exception. The past is everywhere. It is a popular place for pilgrimages, Pope Jean-Paul II came to pray there in 1996 (see picture).

The Wars of Vendée

The famed castle of Puy-du-Fou was burnt during the wars of Vendée. It has since then kept it’s current appearance. What occurred in the year 1793 marked the people of Vendée forever.

As we mentioned above, the Vendean rebelled during the Revolution against the massacres of priests, and the prohibition of Religion. When the Republic wanted to send them to war on its behalf this conscription was issued. The Parisian civilians working for the government shouted "to arms citizens !" (lyrics of La Marseillaise) were then exempt from carrying weapons. But the peaceful Vendeans, were obligated by the new government to go to war for the Parisians. Then a war did happen, but it
happened in Vendée, against the Republic and the Parisians. The assassination of king Louis XVI on January 21 1793 was a crime the people of the Vendée couldn't accept. Rebellions were everywhere in France, but Vendeans and Chouans of Brittany were better organized troops. Peasants sought out the aristocrats much like the Rochejacquelein (painting on the right) initially hesitant, but the raids continued, until the end. The peasants manufactured weapons with what they had, and won many their first engagements against the Republic army. Often with courage and audacity, under the flag with the Heart of Jesus, and their slogan "For God and for the King !". They initially took Cholet, then many cities and villages, while getting rifles and powder from the republican garrisons. The "Infernal columns" (of soldiers) are then created by Paris to destroy the Vendée. The Catholic and Royal (Vendean) Army went across the Loire towards Normandy to take a port there. This move was executed to receive a reinforcement of refugees in England, and then to attack Paris. The 80,000 men (and women) of this " Virée de Galerne ", will never again see their homes in Vendée. They were finally defeated in December of 1793.

Charette (see the painting on the left) and Stofflet were among the few surviving Vendean Generals. They fought again until the beginning of 1796 when they were captured and killed.

Afterwards it was the "chouan" of Brittany, George Cadoudal, who reorganized the remainder of the Vendean and Briton monarchists armies, fighting until 1800. He was killed in 1804 for a plot intended to bomb Napoleon Bonaparte (a plot surprisingly Cadoudal hadn't taken part in !).

During the wars of Vendée, the Infernal Columns and an administration especially created for this purpose (with the sinister Carrier leading it), are devoted to a true genocide in Vendée. The numbers are sometimes discussed in France, but the average of the estimates makes it possible to establish approximately 25% was exterminated of the Vendean population. Let us quote the republican General Westermann : " ... there is no more Vendée. It died under our free sabre with its wives and its children, according to the orders that you had given me, I crushed the children under the feet of the horses, massacred the women who, at least, will not give birth to any more brigands. I do not have a prisoner to reproach myself". Crematoriums were invented in Vendée, among other morbid inventions, like the famous drownings of Nantes. Carrier ordered Vendean prisoners into barges on the Loire, then sank the boats murdering everyone at once.

When you understand the  depth of these mass murders you can see why the Vendeans refuse to forget this painful past.
